Take Action

Take action projects are the most obvious steps in rebuilding the rainforest, but will do little in the long run without the foundation the planning step provides.

These projects are all about bringing life back to the area of the rainforest that has been damaged. As simple as planting a tree may be, there has been a great deal of thought put into every aspect of rebuilding the rainforest. As trees are not the only victims of environmental impacts, everything that has been effected must be addressed. So along with reforestation and replanting, a project was also developed to care for the animal life in the rainforest. There is a significant link between the animal and plant life in the rainforest. One does not last without the other.

Reforestation

In the recuperation project of the bordering woods related to Córrego Ferreirinha’s river microbasin, 8,000 native tree species seedlings of the region have been planted, among them Capixingui (Croton Floribundus), Cedar (Cedrela Fissilis), Copaíba (Copaifera Langsdorffii), Lobeira (Solanum Lycocarpum), Ingá (Inga Uruguensis), Pau Jacaré (Piptadenia Gonoachanta), Pau Viola (Cytarexyllum Myrianthum), Ipê Amarelo (Tabebuia Ochraceae), Embaúba (Cecropia Glaziovi), Amendoim Bravo (Pterogyne Nitens) and many others.

The species used in reforestation are mainly pioneers and initial secondary (rapid and medium growth) species, seeking a rapid recuperation of the bordering area. The uncovered margins promote a silting up and interrupt the existent fauna corridor in the region. With UNESP’s support and DEPRN’s authorization, 2.5 km of Córrego Ferreirinha’s margins have been planted.

A forest arboretum was created for the reproduction of existent species in the company’s woods and to be used in reforestation. The space also offers research with medicinal forest species, which can be used in industry, like Tabebuia Impetiginosa, Guazuma Ulmifolia, and others.

Forest Research and Environmental Education
The bordering area belonging to Centroflora is covered by a dense Seasonal Semideciduous Tropical Forest, where research and environmental educational work is performed together with the company’s employees and their relatives, promoting awareness and involvement in environmental issues.

“Cerrado” and Seasonal Tropical Forest
There is 5.4 ha of “Cerrado” and 13.2 ha of Seasonal Tropical Forest at Centroflora, which allows the existence of a large variety of fauna and flora.

Water is Life

"Water is Life"
The worry with such renewable resource is a worldwide concern, being each company and rural property responsible for preserving the sources of fauna and flora priority element.

Replanting

Replanting is a project in the socio-environmental area which is being developed since April 2000 by Centroflora Group in partnership with other institutions, being at the moment, in its third group of participants.

Centroflora maintains a social commitment with regional community, through social projects aiming to promote a new vision based on the transformation of human being consciousness.

The project came up because the company wanted to act more effectively, not only assisting people with material goods and supplying their immediate needs, but providing them with a professional formation through courses, therefore improving their self-esteem and trying to open doors for a future profession within the environmental sectors.

Centrofauna Project

Centroflora with the support of IBAMA (Brazilian Institute For Environmental Protection), Environmental Police, UNESP (local University) and Botutatu’s City Hallcreated a Selection Center providing the “well-being” of wild birds captured in the twenty counties around Botucatu region. The degree of tameness and sanity of these birds, determined by UNESP’s Zootechny and Veterinary, directs us for the destiny of choice, either by reintroduction to natural environments or delivery to volunteer guardians. These are selected by the City Hall and guided by UNESP’s Educational Department.

Wild birds of rare beauty are often captured in horrible conditions, and are brought from other regions in plastic pipes where only two or three out of ten manage to survive. Bird traffic is the third biggest illegal activity in the world losing only to drugs and weapons traffic. Federal laws are still a long way from ideal regarding minimum spaces for keeping wild animals in captivity, therefore Centroflora is presenting a project for minimum areas for different bird species.
